Australia! Австралия!
My dear pupils of Forms 6 and 7,
Today is April 4, the first day after your spring holidays.
Good news is that we've got mail (получили почту) - 25 letters from Australian children. They live on the other side of the planet (на другой стороне планеты). Now when it gets warmer and warmer every day, and we can see the first spring flowers in sunny places, in Australia it is autumn. Everything is different there - nature, climate, and their way of life.
From the first letter you know some facts about the place where they live, about their school, about your penpals' hobbies, interests, favourite subjects and many other things.
Now it's your turn (ваша очередь) to tell about yourselves and your culture, about your school and your city.
Enjoy the project and don't forget to ask questions if you don't understand something or need help.
Best wishes and good luck (удачи),
Valentina Petrovna

Что делает Австралию богатой? Узнайте ответ на этот вопрос:
What Makes Australia Rich?
Australia is a rich country, and life there is good. Where does the money come from? Sheep, cattle, minerals, wheat, fruit and wine are some of the answers.
Shep are very important for the country. Most Australian sheep are Spanish merinos (порода овец). People first brought them to Australia in 1797. Merinos are strong animals and they live happily in warm dry places. Now twenty per cent of the world's sheep live in Australia, and twenty-five per cent of the world's wool comes from there.
Cattle live mainly in the drier parts of the north and centre, and cattle stations cover one-quarter of Australia. Diffrent countries all over the world buy meat from Australian cattle.
Gold made Australia rich in the nineteenth century. after that oil, silver and other minerals brought millions of dollars for Australia. Not everyone is happy about this, because when people dig for minerals they often destroy the land.
The USA, China and Japan buy a lot of wheat from Australia. The country grows other food, too, for example bananas and in the south, where it is less hot, apples. Australia is mking very good wine too.
But Australia is like many other modern countries because now most of its workers do not work in factories or on farms; two-thirds of them work in shops, offices, banks or schools. (из книги для чтения к учебнику 7 класса. Серия "Новый курс английского языка для российских школ")
